I quit process-improvement contracting for engineering companies in 2001 to become a full-time, self-employed dog trainer.

The engineering world has always created plans for building and manufacturing by drawing them on paper with a pencil. While I was teaching drafting (engineering graphics) in a private college, computer drafting became available in the fringes. Our college got to test a computer-aided drafting (CAD) station created by Bausch and Lomb.

I was in love. I pushed every button, read every manual, typed every command, and created designs to interact with on a screen. Next, I learned to automate the software to streamline processes through various programming languages.

Now, I had to explain all this to engineers and drafters who were very proud of their unique artistic drafting skills. Convincing them to use an ugly beige plastic machine called a computer instead was, let's say, more than a simple challenge.
