Dogs just want to  have fun!!

Wednesday's at Camp Brainy Dog are field trip days.

Dogs in training load up from camp, for a day of fun in the sun, swimming, greeting animals and more.  Have you seen one of the letters dogs write from camp.  Dogs here use the computer once a week to write home to Mom and Dad.  They share photos, tell what they have been learning at camp and explain how to practice their lessons at home.

Field trips include an element of training.
After all, the most important time to have a trained dog is when you are out living your life with your dogs.  This means dogs need to practice in all environments, not just in the kitchen before dinner.

A well trained dog should behave when he/she is excited or tired.
This means, practice when they are excited.  If they'll listen when they are excited they sure as heck will listen when they are tired.  Yes, at first, practice when they are calm, in an area with no distractions, but, it only counts when they are excited yet in control enough to listen to you.  We all need plenty of exercise, so do our dogs, but you don't have to run five miles first in order to get your dog to listen.

Structured field trips build experience in many environments for your dogs.
The more environments they are introduced to the more they will be comfortable in.  The more they are comfortable in, the better they will listen and that translates to safe dogs, less chance of injury to dogs and humans.  Safety is the bottom line.

Can you go shopping with your dog?  It is possible to walk calmly through a dog supply store without knocking over displays, having to mop up your dogs pee or without being ask pay for the snacks she ate during her browsing.  Think about it.  Assistant dogs do it all the time.  Your dogs can be trained just as well as an assistant dog, then you can spend more quality time with them.
